In August of 1987, I slept on the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. It was a cold but clear and windless night with wonderful views of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Owens valley. I looked eastward as the sun was setting and noticed the spectacular sight I captured in this photograph. What you see here is the shadow of Mt. Whitney projected upward onto the sky mimicking the shape of Lone Pine peak below it. Below in the distance is the Owens valley and beyond that is the Inyo Mountains. Photograph by Rick Scott.
