Many people drive through the Mojave desert in California without giving it any thought, except for concerns about their cars breaking down in the heat. In my exploration of this area, I found many beautiful places and hideouts that deserve visiting. On one winter trip, I camped at the base of the large volcano on the right. It was a very cold and windy in the morning, but my friend Joe Orman and I still hiked to the top of the volcano. The winds at the top were enough to knock you over, but the views of the large volcano field that covered many miles was a great sight to see.
I scanned the image with a Nikon Coolscan LS-10. This image had such a large dynamic range, I had to scan the slide twice with two different exposures and combined them using Adobe Photoshop. Photograph by Rick Scott.
