What you get to see when you visit Mammoth Hot Springs at Yellowstone National Park is a large travertine hill with many exquisite terraces. This is formed from spring water that is rich in calcium carbonates depositing the mineral as it flows over older travertine and evaporating. Pure calcium carbonate leaves the white formations while impurities create other colors. The image was scanned with a Nikon Coolscan LS-10 and Adobe Photoshop was used to apply mild color correction and sharpening. Photographed by Rick Scott on 7 July 1994.
