Lone Tree at El Morro National Monument, New Mexico

PHOTO

It can be lonely at the top and that's the feeling I had for this tree when I saw it shortly after hiking to the top of El Morro, a 200 foot tall sandstone bluff in New Mexico. Also known as Inscription Rock, it's located in the El Morro National Monument. It was a popular location in the early exploration and pioneer days of the southwestern United States to take a break and get water from its natural protected pool.
