Canyon Lake by Moonlight

PHOTO

Canyon lake is one of a string of lakes along the Salt river east of Phoenix, Arizona. It's a very popular destination for boaters and to go fishing. There is also a dinner cruise available on the Dolly Steamer, a replica of a double-decked sternwheeler boat.

One of my friends (I won't mention Barry by name) stated that digital cameras aren't good enough to take photographs such as lakes by moonlight, so I took that as a challenge. The result is the photograph on this page. Notice the reflection of the cliff on the far side of the lake. The star trail in the left half of the sky is from the star Porrima (29-Gamma Virginis). According to George A. Davis, Jr. in his booklet, Pronunciations, Derivations, and Meanings of a Selected List of Star Names, Porrima is the name of a Roman nymph or goddess of prophecy and child-birth.

I used my Canon EOS 20D digital camera with an exposure of 300 seconds (5 minutes) at f/8. The camera was set to ISO 100 in RAW mode. The lens was a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM at the 70mm position. The photograph was started at 10:52pm MST on 28 January 2005. Adobe Photoshop CS was used for the RAW conversion and image processing. Photograph by Rick Scott.
